STFU Hatemongers

Hey Tumblr, is anyone out there interested in helping me with an art project about microaggressions and the marginalization and oppression social groups? 

Do you have a story to tell about how people have made you feel less than or “other” for being who you are or “different” from the “norm”? Let me know!

I’m collecting these audio recordings of the comments, and experiences that you’ve experienced that made you feel otherized, discriminated against, and/or less than. I’m going to put them together into an audio collage and eventually work them into characters for my upcoming performance piece entitled, “Flattery”. If you don’t want your voice recorded, you can send in written accounts of your experiences and I can have them recorded by some friends.

“Flattery” is a performance experience meant to drive home the experience of being made to feel like an object, side show act or petting zoo animal that is often endured by many people of colour,multiracial people, women, homosexuals, bisexuals, pansexuals,aces,intersex, transgender, genderqueer, gender variant and non-binary people, religious and spiritual minorities, and people with mental and physical disabilities. So many people approach us with invasive questions, comments and inappropriate touching. What is most upsetting to me is that we are expected to just sit back and take it, and some people even expect us to be flattered by their flagrant disregard for our personal space and privacy. This project will exaggerate this experience by mixing it with visual and performance art. The first part of the project will be the small audio collage, and over the next few years, I plan to develop this into a full scale performance that will open a gallery installation of my other work.

If you’re interested in having some of your stories told and/or your experiences reenacted in this project, let me know. You can submit text accounts to my ask or email me audio files. Submissions can be as “simple” as a single hate word, or as complex as an entire encounter including questions, ignorant remarks, and inappropriate touching. Anything in between is welcomed and encouraged.
